TO SET UP YOUR BARCODE SCANNER
Charge your scanner by plugging it's USB cord into your laptop. Go to the Manuals page of this website and print page 41. Scan the following barcodes: Enter Setup>Enable Code 39>Exit with Save. Keep the scanner dongle plugged into your computer.
TO SET UP YOUR LABEL PRINTER
Before you connect the printer to the computer:
1. With the printer open, use the green roller wheel to open the green media guide until it fits your label. Put a roll of labels on your label holder. Feed the first label into the printer, tucking it under the small green guides. Unwrap a ribbon*, pull its adhesive strip free, then load following the instructions on pages 20 thru 22 of the Manual (see the Manuals page of this website). Close the printer.
2. Turn on the printer. If the status light blinks green, press the Feed button once to set the printer in Ready mode. See the Troubleshooting Guide on the Manuals page if the Feed button does not turn solid green.
3. Press the Feed button three times so that the printer calibrates by printing a few labels.
4. Once the status light is solid green, press and hold the Feed button until the status light flashes once.
5 Release the Feed button. A configuration label will print.
6. Use the USB cord to connect the printer to your computer, then:
7. Download* the Zebra Printer Setup Utilities for Windows from Zebra Printer Setup Download . Click along to install the software* and then:
8. Click on Install New Printer. If asked, choose ZDesigner GX430t. Follow along to Finish
9. Click on Configure Printer Settings. Make the darkness 24 and Size 4” wide by 6“ tall. Click Next thru to Finish.
10. Click on Configure Printer Connectivity, choose Wired. Click thru to Finish.
11. Wait 2 minutes, then turn off the printer.
12. Turn the printer on and press the Feed button until it blinks 6 times. When it stops, press the feed button once more.
13. Go to Settings>Printers & Scanners>Select your Zebra printer, then click on Printer Properties> Ports and scroll down to select the first USB option you see, then click on OK. If the status of your printer says "Error", plug the USB cord into another port on the computer -- usually the first one at upper right works right away.
14. Go to the Assign Printer tab of both Inventory Logs and follow instructions .
15. Protect your printer by putting a large, clear plastic bag over the label holder so that its weight holds the bag in place and you can easily fold it back to replace labels. Tack the open end to the top of the printer with a bit of tape. -- Printers are generally very durable, but any dirt/dust on the paper fed into it goes directly into its delicate guts.
* Avoid touching the ink side of the ribbon or you will have to waste labels to print past that part.
HANDLING FREEZING TEMPERATURES
Your laptop needs protection from freezing temperatures, but your label printer and recommended office printer will be fine in the cold. If you use an office printer that takes ink cartridges instead of toner, it will also need protection.
If needed, consider building a heated shipping and receiving booth to house your equipment. If you don't take that route, you can use the following procedure to build a "heat box" for your laptop.
Heat Box: Using a 24”x16”x12” cardboard box, fold in and tape down the opening flaps against the inside walls. Put the box on its long side and line the bottom with old tile or low profile concrete pavers. Cut a hole just large enough for your power and printer cords. Place a seedling heat mat, such as Vivosun 10”x20.75” (about $21 on Amazon) on the tile/pavers, then put the laptop on top of it. If not taking the laptop to a heated space when finished, close the laptop lid and put an old blanket over the box.
If your laptop accidently gets too cold, take it into a heated environment, open the lid and let it slowly warm up for 2 hours. If you are using it out of the heat box during intense cold and it starts to act weird, it needs to warm up before continuing.
